Jason Henninger, writing a rant about literary vs. speculative fiction on Tor.com.
Henninger’s post rehashes an old argument: “genre” fiction isn’t good literature, and any time a literary critic likes a piece of genre fiction it’s often explained as not really being genre fiction at all. (See, for example, The Road, Slaughterhouse Five, etc.)
Dave Eggers gives a long and fascinating rant back in 2000 to a journalist asking questions about his supposed “selling out” with AHWOFG. (via matthewb)
io9 links to this rant about theatre and SF:
Perhaps this is part of the reason that sci-fi so rarely makes it onto the stage. As well as being regarded with a certain warmth, there’s also a sense of mistrust around the genre. Writers fear that it’s somehow a bit uncool - a bit 70s - and so we get interminable plays about Urgent Contemporary Issues rather than coolly speculative projections. It’s a shame. After all, some of the 20th century’s greatest literature was set in the future - consider 1984, Brave New World and A Clockwork Orange.
Then again, there is some hope for theatre and SF. Maybe sometime I should post a description of my undergraduate theatre prof’s grad school stage adaptation of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns.
Few things to me are more vital than journalism practiced according to high standards. Simply put, Google could do much more to protect this public trust: Offer support to journalism education and professional groups dedicated to truth seeking and time-honored ethical values. And assist newspapers directly, just as I think it’s time for newspapers to band together to sue to protect content.
Neil Henry may be a journo professor at UC-Berkeley, but he clearly doesn’t understand how journalism on the internet works. He blasts Google News for “provid[ing] more news every day, free of charge no less!” But all Google News does is provide links to existing content on — wait for it — newspaper sites. They don’t write any news themselves! Doesn’t Marketplace have any fact checkers? They need to learn some (in Henry’s words) “time-honored ethical values” and not deal in such “biased rants.”
this is how I want to camp.
